I was holding out on doing a music category. Too personal, I thought. Who would care? But it's fast and easy when your not thinking of anything profound, which I rarely am anyway.
Coming back to Canada meant three things with regards to music. 1) I was able to listen to those CDs I hadn't heard for five and a half years. 2) I was able to listen to those old cassettes I hadn't listened to for equally as long and decide which ones I wanted to get on CD. 3) I was able to pick up new CDs, both recent and classic. From January to December there were various songs I played over and over ago for a week or two until the next song took over. Here's a list of twenty-five songs that got lots of play time from the beginning of the year right up to the last day.
1. Work - Jimmy Eat World, from Futures.
2. Luxeria - The Tea Party, from Seven Circles.
3. The Nile Song - Pink Floyd, from Soundtrack for the movie More.
4. The World You Love - Jimmy Eat World, from Futures.
5. Pieces - Sum 41, from Chuck.
6. Stacked Actors - Foo Fighters, from There is Nothing Left to Lose.
7. Break On Through (to the other side) - The Doors, from The Best of the Doors.
8. I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones, from Road to Ruin.
9. Money City Maniacs - Sloan, from Navy Blues.
10. Try to Make It - Sloan, from A Sides Win.
11. Blue Orchid - The White Stripes, from Get Behind Me Satan.
12. Riders of the Storm - The Doors, from The Best of the Doors.
13. Symbolistic White Walls - The Matthew Good Band, from The Last of the Ghetto Astronauts.
14. Childhood's End - Pink Floyd, from Obscured by Clouds.
15. The Revenge of Anus Presley - The Butthole Surfers, from PCPPEP.
16. Limelight - Rush, from Moving Pictures.
17. Lucifer Sam - Pink Floyd, from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
18. Ride My Seesaw - The Moody Blues, from In Search of the Lost Chord.
19. 2000 Light Years from Home - The Rolling Stones, from Their Satanic Majesties Request.
20. Bad Scene - Ten Years After, from Ssssh.
21. Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead, from The Bends.
22. Mother F__er - Beck, from Mellow Gold.
23. Tell Me Something I Don't Know - Sloan, from the Japanese release of A Sides Win.
24. Samidare - Maki Yano, from Ii Kaze.
25. Suki na Hito - Maki Yano, from the Kono Mama single.
Thanks to Kozue for sending the last three CDs from Japan just in time for Christmas.
If you're still with me, here are ten albums - some old, some new - that I really enjoyed in 2005.
Navy Blues - Sloan. I've had it since it came out and I'm liking it better every year.
Let's Knife - Shonen Knife. Hadn't heard this for years. Couldn't stop with just a couple of songs.
A Sides Win - Sloan. I never realized how many of the singles were my favourites.
Action Pact - Sloan. Many Sloan fans and critics didn't like this album. I found it was great for road trips.
The Bends - Radiohead. My pick for pleasant surprise of the year for me.
To Our Children's Children's Children - The Moody Blues. I got on a Moody Blues kick in December but none of the other first five albums are as good as this one in my opinion.
Seven Circles - The Tea Party. What a kick ass album this is. I was glad to hear the guitar sound improved over The Interzone Mantras.
In A Coma - Matthew Good. An excellent compilation of his stuff and great videos too. Thanks Evonne!
Futures - Jimmy Eat World. Five tracks from this album got no rest for weeks on my CD player.
Mellow Gold - Beck. I only just got into Beck two weeks ago with the purchase of this album. I am very impressed and today I bought Guero. Next Odelay!
Finally I have to say how much I enjoyed seeing Sloan in Vancouver and Halifax this year and I was also impressed with the Foo Fighters concert. I forgot how much fun it was to go to a concert. Well, except for the idiots that come by and interrupt your fun from time to time.
